Improving hearing loss

hl

Hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing) in the ears, or difficulty understanding speech affects the lifestyles of over 200,000 people of all ages and genders.  We will have an eBook on this very soon!

Hearing loss can be related to illnesses or other inherited factors. Audiologists are professionals who evaluate options for better hearing. Seek out the best audiologist in Pasadena for a thorough examination and recommendations.

Audiology is the study of hearing from a scientific and medical point of view, the concept was first used in 1946. Education, training, and solid research experience for this field require a bachelor’s degree in a related field and a doctoral degree in audiology (Aud.D.).
Your assessment will include measurement of your ability to hear different sounds, pitches, and frequencies. The process is painless and non-invasive, and takes less than one hour. After the testing, the audiologist will discuss the results and suggest treatment strategies. The solution may require a hearing aid. Types of custom-made hearing aids include:
- Invisible-in-the-canal for mild to moderate hearing loss
- Completely-in-the-canal shows only the tip of the removal handle outside the ear
- In-the-ear instruments fit within the outer portion of the ear
- Receiver-in-canal aids are barely visible and contain a speaker inside the ear canal
- Behind the ear technology employs a casing and operates with an earbud or ear mold

All of the above styles are available in different colors and finishes to complement a variety of hair and skin tones.
In most cases, patients will receive a hearing aid at that first appointment. Auditory assistants will counsel you through the initial adjustment and fitting. These trained workers will provide counseling for the emotions connected to daily reliance on the device. All your questions will be answered and complete instructions for use and care of the instrument will be discussed in detail. Information regarding battery life, carrying cases, chargers, and other essential items will be provided.

Recovery from an ear infection

Fluid in the middle ear is a condition that is called "otitis media with effusion." It often occurs during recovery from an ear infection or when an infection is coming on. If the condition is left untreated, it could result in chronic ear infections, which can have the potential for serious consequences like hearing loss, which could then require the use of hearing aids.

Image result for Ototoxicity, Cancer treatments & hearing loss
Otitis Media is a condition that is diagnosed in 28 percent of children. That's how many have actually been diagnosed by an audiologist as having had one or more episodes. This condition is generally higher in children ages seven months to three years, as well as in white children as opposed to African American ones. In addition, children who live in rural areas have incidents of the condition slightly more often those who live in urban areas. And, although kids from the ages of 19 months to two years had the highest rate of total expenditures for the condition per year at $239.68, Medicaid actually covered more financially for audiologist visits than for any medical procedures or medications in all of the age groups of children.

In any case, no matter what the age of the child affected by Otitis Media, finding the best audiologist for treatment is crucial. And, in the event that hearing aids are necessary, a parent can find good hearing aid deals by asking their audiologist for a recommendation or doing some online research into what is currently available in the area of hearing aid sales. Ototoxicity is a condition that can be caused by the use of antineoplastic agents like Cisplatin that are extremely potent and often used in the treatment of various types of cancer. In fact, as many as 93 percent of the patients who have received Cisplatin end up developing sensorineural hearing loss that is not only progressive but also irreversible. Unfortunately, this can lead to a quality of life that is severely diminished for survivors of cancer and finding the best audiologist could be necessary

Image result for Ototoxicity, Cancer treatments & hearing loss
There currently isn’t any available treatment for ototoxicity that is caused by Cisplatin. A number of medical studies have been aiming at assessing methods for potentially protecting against ototoxicity using certain compounds, including calcium channel blockers, anti-apoptotic agents, antioxidants, caspase inhibitors, and anti-inflammatories.

Age Related Hearing Loss

According to Doctors of Hearing, age related hearing loss has been found to be caused by the weakening of the Glycine in the mammalian cochlear. The actual processes that leads to the condition are not known. Studies from mice have shown that higher bushy cells' glycinergic inhibitions are higher in older individuals than younger people. Loss of hearing affects individual’s social and health negatively leading to a lower quality of life. When individual of the same age are compared, those suffering from hearing loss lead a more solitary life.

Effects of Hearing Loss
The studies were done on a group of men and women, numbering 1,140 and aged over 70 years. The study found that those who had hearing problems were more likely to have been admitted in hospital. They had about a 32% more chance of being admitted to a hospital when compared to another group of 529 men and women. These were of the same age who had no hearing problem. Doctors of Hearing attributes that to the isolation they live in which could also lead to cases of poor diet, less exercising, and a feeling of loneliness.

Managing Hearing Loss

Eating a healthy diet and living with understanding people can help people who have lost their sense of hearing to cope. Use of hearing aids can also help to lower the chances of isolation happening; that is because most people find it hard to repeat themselves several times in a conversation. NoiseInduced Hearing Loss and Tinnitus

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss happens when excessive noise causes internal year damage. The immune system then responds by replacing the damaged cells with a scar tissue. Since the scar tissue cannot convert mechanical signals to electrical pulses as the rest of the inner ear cells, hearing loss occurs. The more tissue damage there is, the greater the extent of the damage.

Hearing Protection Using Genes

Doctors of Hearing's findings show that when a person is exposed to higher levels of noise, the hair cell and neural connections are disrupted. Doctors of Hearing have found that introducing genes that help resist the damage to hair cells and neural junctions prevent the noise-induced hearing loss. That means soon it could be possible to protect ourselves from noise pollution.

Sources of Noise

Hearing Loss due to excessive noise affects about 5% to 10% of the population. Those who are most vulnerable are those who work in factories. However, due to the high number of jobs being exported to developing countries, the number of Americans who are exposed workplace noise is consistently dropping.
According findings by DoctorsOfHearing, about 50% of manufacturing jobs have been transferred to developing countries so far. That means Americans who are getting noise induced damage are mostly getting it from other sources such as when hunting, and loud music from accessories such as iPods.

Phantom noise (Tinnitus)

Hearing of phantom noise (Tinnitus,) is a problem that is experienced by millions of people. The main cause has been shown to be an increase in voltage across the Kv7.2/3 channel of the inner ear. That increase is only shown in ears that have been exposed to excessive noise. These findings have made it possible to design drugs that may restore the electrochemical balance to prevent Tinnitus.

Please contact DoctorsOfHearing in Los Angeles, Pasadena to get help if you hear phantom noises or you have been exposed to excessive noise.

Genetics and Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can happen because of genetic mutations during development of a baby. The inner ear has two special proteins that are only found in the ear. These proteins can be affected by gene mutations that happen when babies are developing in the womb.Related image

Ongoing research shows that it may soon be possible to intervene and stop those mutations. If you are about to have a baby, you should contact Doctors of Hearing for an update of what can be done to save your unborn child from hearing loss. The gene mutations either cause a delay in hearing development of hearing or total loss.

The genes in question are the SLC26A4, they are the ones that encode proteins forming hearing channels capable of converting sound waves into electrical pulses that can be transmitted by neurons into the brain. The brain can then process the electrical pulses to interpret sounds. When these genes mutate, they cause a variance in the way the channel are formed.

That in turn causes the channels to produce wrong electrical pulses that the brain cannot interpret correctly. DoctorsOfHearing says current research points to a possibility of intervening and stopping hearing loss during embryonic formation. It is possible to intervene and stop the effects caused by the gene mutations that lead to deafness.

Although no tests have been done on humans, the results showed that absences of the gene caused swelling of the inner ear, thus causing deafness. Other effects of the gene mutation are loss of balance, which could explain why other kids take long before they learn to walk.

Image result for Genetics and Hearing Loss

The research concluded that by repairing the endolymphatic sac while the baby is still in the embryonic stage, it could be possible to restore hearing loss and balance to normal levels. If you are expecting to have a baby, or there are cases of deafness in your family, it is possible your unborn child will be affected as well.
You should visit Doctors of Hearing, in Los Angeles, Pasadena, for a diagnosis and medical advice.

Hair Cell Regeneration

Our inner ear has a sensory organ called the epithlium that has two layers of cells. The first layer is the hair cells. The second layer is the Supporting Cells. The hair cells in particular are sensitive to change in motion, sound waves, and gravity. In humans, just like the rest of mammals, the inner ears cannot regenerate if they are destroyed.Image result for Hair Cell Regeneration

Irreversible Damage of Hair Cells
The damaged tissues are usually replaced by scar tissue. Any excessive exposure to acoustic noise will cause a permanent damage to hair cells. According to Doctors of Hearing's study to learn what happen found that in zebrafish using a DGE (digital gene expression), and observing the specimen under high resolution, damage-induced hair reproduction was demonstrated. That is important because the zebrafish is very similar to the sensory epithelia of our inner ear. It may help in the stem cell research with a focus to the human ear.

Higher Noise Levels Guarantees Damage to Our Inner Ear

In another study to find out how much damage gunfire can do to our ears, it was found that noise produce by 10 and 200 rounds of fire reduced the pig's perception of sound by 66% to 97%. What that mean is that we have to protect our ears from all sorts of ear damage from excessive noise. If you think that you might already be affected after being exposed to excessive noise, then you should contact DoctorsOfHearing in Los Angeles, Pasadena.

Hair Cells Support
Other studies done on mice have indicated that even though the hair cell is not responsible for supporting itself; the Support Cells are right beneath it. That’s currently the focus of the next research in finding a solution with damage caused by excessive noise levels. If you have any questions about hair cell loss management, please contact Doctors of Hearing in Los Angeles, Pasadena.

Cochlear implants

Cochlear implants

In Pasadena, Los Angeles, knowledge of audiology and hearing is improving every day through the hard work of doctors and researchers. Disorders and dysfunction of the inner ear can lead to complex problems for a patient.

Image result for Cochlear implants

Cochlear implants are electronic medical devices that have improved the lives of many who suffer from inner ear problems. Cochlear implants provide sound signals to the brain by performing the functions that a healthy inner ear would perform. Cochlear implants are useful for those who have moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears, receive no benefit from hearing aids, and score 65% or less on sentence recognition tests. They can be planted in both ears to improve the ability to identify direction of sound.

Image result for Cochlear implants

Cochlear implants have come a long way since their initial invention. Today, the benefits are extensive. They have been proven to work more effectively than hearing aids, with an average of 80% sentence understanding. Cochlear implants also allow patients to focus in noisy environments and carry out successful conversations.

There are some factors that can affect these benefits, which is why it is important to check and monitor a patient’s progress regularly. Depending on how severe their hearing loss is, how long they had hearing loss before they got their cochlear implant, and other medical conditions, the success of an implant may vary.

Overall, these devices require monitoring to ensure that each patient’s individual needs are met. Since their initial invention, cochlear implants have changed the face of audiology and hearing and have allowed many to live normal lives. Talk to a doctors of hearing if you would like to receive more information.

Auditory processing disorders

Auditory processing disorders

Our audiology practice in Pasadena, Los Angeles, aims to understand different hearing disorders such as auditory processing disorders. APDs are also known as central auditory processing disorders. They can be hard to recognize and diagnose due to the fact that symptom vary between different age groups. APDs occur most commonly in children of all ages.

Image result for Auditory processing disorders

Preschoolers can begin to exhibit symptoms, though diagnosis of APDs normally occurs in grade school. Some symptoms displayed in preschoolers include difficulty tuning out background noise, and discomfort when hearing loud noises. Usually, preschoolers will not like being read to and won't be able to sit still for story time at school. This is because children with APD are struggling to process what they hear, and this causes them to be overly sensitive to sounds and background noise. Often, children with APD will need to have things repeated them and will have trouble remembering information and instructions.

In grade school, these symptoms will become more problematic. Children will begin to dread reading and sounding out words they don't know. This is because they are struggling to process how different sounds work together in order to form words. These children will have poor conversation skills and will forget things because they have difficulty recalling information they have heard.

APDs can become worse if not treated, impairing a child’s life and their ability to learn. A doctor of hearing will be able to solve the problem with various treatment methods such as therapy (specifically speech therapy) and various learning methods that can be applied in the school place. APD is treatable but what is most important is recognizing symptoms early on (preferably at the pre-school level) in order to start treatment right away.  Contact us at DoctorsOfHearing.com for more information!

Ear Tuned to Today's Audiology

It’s hard to imagine what an important role good hearing plays in our lives. When we have it, we never think about it.

In the distant past, most of the noise our ancestors had to deal with came from natural sources, rushing water, crackling fires and the occasional rainfall or lightning and thunder.

Today we’re overwhelmed by noise. Traffic noises, music with bass woofers thrown in for added pressure on our eardrums. Noise from construction sites—noise from all sides.

 Hearing Loss Treatment

It’s little wonder then that as we age, our hearing will have suffered from all this loud noise, and the day may well come when we realize something is not right. Perhaps it’s time to visit anaudiologist.

Not so long ago, the hearing aid was a funnel-like instrument you could hold to your ear . It could be quite helpful in many cases, but carrying a huge funnel around every place you go presents an awkward problem.

Since those primitive hearing aid devices, audiology has progressed to the point where today, hearing aids are tiny, can be fine-tuned on the computer to give a wearer the best possible custom hearing.

Of course, not everyone is lucky enough to be born with excellent hearing, and some childhood diseases may damage our hearing as well.

While a good deal of research has gone into cochlear implants, hair cell regeneration and other possibilities, these are generally more specialized treatments directed toward patients who are deemed good subjects, patients who otherwise, may not be helped.

For most of us, a properly fitted and tuned hearing aid, or two, can bring our hearing “back to life”. While even the finest hearing aids have their limitations, a properly fitted hearing aid can make television, conversation, telephones and the many other aspects of life so much more satisfying again than perhaps the patient has experienced in many a year.

Hiss, Roar, Whoosh- Trying to Tune Out Tinnitus?

Hearing aids today have the capability, for instance, in restaurants or other noisy locales, to tune out much of the background noise allowing the wearer to hear speech in the immediate surroundings and overall enjoy a much more satisfying experience.

If you have any questions about your hearing, it’s time for a visit to an audiologist for an in-depth hearing test. This will give you a very accurate picture of your hearing and what can be done to improve it if necessary.

Hearing Loss - Causes, Symptoms and Solutions

Hearing Loss can occur at any age, and for a number of reasons. Depending on the type, treatment may vary. Basically, hearing loss could be conductive, sensorineural or mixed, that is both conductive and sensorineural. While there is problem in conducting sound waves along the outer ear, eardrum and middle ear in the conductive type of hearing loss,

sensorineural type describes the situation in which the root cause is in the outer ear, cranial nerve or central auditory processing parts of the brain.

Symptoms

Most people believe that hearing loss affects only older people. According to research, 20% of adults in America report of hearing problems. While the problem is a common one, a lot of people do not know what the symptoms are until it becomes too late. Below are symptoms that may develop when one starts to have hearing problems: Image result for Causes of Hearing Loss

• Difficulty in Understanding what people are saying.
• Muffled voices.
• Difficulty in picking out people’s voices among other noise.
• Listening to TV programs and Radio at higher volumes than usual.
• Depression
• Ear pain, itching and irritation.
• Fluid coming out of the ear due to infection.

Causes of Hearing Loss

Gradual exposure to Loud Music and Aging

Gradual exposure to loud music and aging could lead to damage of the nerve cells that send sound signal to the brain. When there is no nerve cell to send sound messages to the brain, there is shortage in the hearing abilities which could cause higher pitch sounds to appear like muffles.

Earwax buildup

The buildup of earwax can block the ear canal and prevent the conduction of sound waves.

Image result for Ear Infection

Ear Infection and Unhealthy Ear Growth
In the outer or middle ear, the presence of an infection, or worse the growth of a tumor would greatly affect hearing.

Damaged Ear Drums
When the eardrum is ruptured, or there is a tympanic membrane perforation which is caused by loud blast of noise that suddenly changes in pressure. This can easily cause, at best, an infection or, at worst, a perforated ear drum which in turn affects the level of hearing loss.

Hearing Solutions
The first step into getting hearing solution is making a timely visit to your audiologists. This is an important aspect of curing loss of hearing because audiologists would easily tell you specifically, through a full test, what is causing it. From there, it is easier to administer a hearing solution. Also, the audiologists may recommend hearing aids which are of different types, design, functions and costs. Although, hearing aids would not correct hearing loss totally, they are still very effective in many situations.

An Overview of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is officially defied as the inability to hear. Those effected, are typically referred to as hard of hearing and can occur in one or both ears. In adults, hearing loss can result in work-related difficulties and in children, it can cause learning problems. It is important to know what causes hearing loss, what an audiologist is, types of hearing aids and physiological issues with hearing loss.

Causes of Hearing Loss

There are multiple causes of hearing loss including ageing, disorders, genetics, noise and perinatal problems. As human’s age, hearing loss progressively occurs due to the inability to hear high frequencies. Disorders such as strokes, multiple sclerosis, perilymph fistula and viral infections can all cause hearing problems. Also, hearing loss can be genetically inherited. Loud noises causes almost half of hearing loss cases. Finally, fetal alcohol spectrum and premature birth can affect hearing.

An audiologist is a medical professional who specializes in diagnosing and treating auditory disorders as well as the vestibular system of the ear. They can recommend hearing aids, counsel families through new diagnosis, create education programs and implement newborn hearing screening programs.

Hearing Aids

Hearing aids are electroacoustic devices designed to amplify sounds for the wearer which are hearing solutions. There are numerous types including, behind-the-ear, body worn, bone-anchored, disposable, eyeglass, extended wear, in-the-ear, invisible, open-fit, personal programmable and stethoscope aids.

Physiological Issues with Hearing Loss

Physically, there are two types of physiological hearing loss: conductive and sensorineural. Conductive hearing loss is caused by fixation of the bones in the middle of the ear that interrupts the bone chain. This is typically the result of a severe infection or head trauma. Sensorineural hearing loss involves an impairment of the nerves which limits loudness and clarity. This is caused by damage to the feather-like hair cells from an extended period of high levels of noise.
