FM Systems

What is an FM sytem?

An FM system is a wireless system.  It uses hardmless radio waves that sends words or speech directly into the ears via hearing aids via a device called an iSense FM recevier, without the distracting noise.  It that helps people understand speech in noisy situations and over distances of up to 15 meters (50 feet).

Some FM systems work together with hearing aids, while others are designed for those with normal hearing (iSense FM receiver, looks like a hearing aid but its not).  The iSense FM receiver is used with those who suffer from ADHD and or Auditory Processing Disorders.

Avoid lanyards, keychains or chunky neckales that will clang against the microphone and cause unwanted noise in the student's FM device.

Turn off and change teh microphone as needed.  100% charge should occur in approximatly 2 hours. Please contact an educational Audioologist or hearing aid manufacturer if the battery does not appear to be holding its charge (approx. 12 hours of use time).

Accesories: A/V cord for use in the headphone jack (with a computer, cd player, iPod, DVD player, etc) when it is desired that the student listen to a device individually.  This elimates the need for a student to wear headphones.

Student's iSense FM receiver (used by those without hearing loss).

Candidates: Those with Auditory Processing disorders, and hyper activity disorders.

How your iSense FM reciever works:

The teacher wears a microphone (trasmitter).  The student wears the iSense directly on the (normal hearing) ear.  The microphone picks up the teacher's voice and instantly relays it by radio directly to the iSense on the teacher's ear.  The student always hears the teachers's voice comfortably loud and clear, even in a noisy environment or if the teacher is at a distance.

Inserting a new battery and turning device on/off:

Using the nail grip, open the battery compartment completely and remove old battery.

Remove protective foil from new battery.  Wait at least 30 seconds before inserting it

Insert a new battery into the battery compartment.  Ensure that the side with the + sign (flat surface) is in line with the + marked on the battery compartment.

Gently close the battery compartment cover until it clicks into place.  The device is on.

If there is any resistance when shutting the compartment, ensure that the battery is inserted correctly. The comparetment may not close properly if the battery is upside down and the iSense will not work.

Battery operating life is around 30-40 hours.  Student will hear an audible noise (3 long beeps) when wearing the iSense if the battery is depleted.

Batteries must be dsponsed of proerly and are toxic when swallowed!!!

When not in use, leave the battery compartment open to turn off and allow any moisture to evaporate.

Receivers are to remain at school.  Please help the student remember to put them on in the morning and remove them before the end of the school day.

Trobuleshooting:

Hold the transmitter (teacher mic) close to the student wearing the hearing aids with receivers attached, approximatly 8 inches from the recivers.

Press the left soft key Monitor.  The trasnmitter then begings to serch for the receivers.  Make sure you are within synchronization range until the receivers are shown on the LCD display.

The result of the monitoring process will be displayed on the LCD display. The completion of the Monitoring process is marked with a beeping sound audible to the student.

The LCD display will list the receivers detected.  A check mark indicates the receiver is functioning properly.  An "X" indicates a problem.  In order to view detalied results, slect the desired receiver on the LCD display and press the OK key.  For the purpose of this step, you no longer need to be close to the receiver.  If a student uses 2 receivers but you are unable to detect both during the monitoring process, have the student remove or turn off one hearing aid and procedeed checking one device at a time.
