FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Pasadena, CA) In recognition of her successes as a businesswoman, compassionate Audiologist, and community advocate, Dr. Norma Camacho of Doctors Of Hearing Inc. and Love2Hear Inc. was honored with the Congressional Woman of the Year Award for the City of Pasadena. The award was given on April 13, 2019, as part of the Congressional Women of the Year Awards Ceremony, hosted by Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27). Dr. Camacho graciously accepted the award, appreciating the City of Pasadena as Mayor Tornek also awarded and recognized her efforts and unwavering dedication.

The Congressional Women of the Year Awards Ceremony is an ongoing annual event in Pasadena for the past decade. This award was created to recognize prominent women leaders in the community. All of the women Camacho Chu Awardhonored have received a nomination from their peers and the community in recognition of their efforts and leadership.

Dr. Camacho founded Doctors of Hearing, a California-based audiology clinic, which offers cutting-edge services to patients of all ages. While based out of Pasadena, she has created a network of reliable audiologists throughout Southern-California to help patients find trustworthy audiologists in their local area. As a bilingual Spanish speaker, Dr. Camacho is passionate about offering services in patients’ native language and runs numerous bilingual offices. Dr. Camacho’s clinical certifications, educational background, and determination to help her patients have been the driving force behind Doctors of Hearing and Love2Hear.logo love2hearIMG JPG

Love2Hear is a nonprofit organization, oriented to help college students and veterans who otherwise cannot afford hearing devices. Love2Hear provides free/reduced-fee services for veterans and college students struggling with the cost of hearing devices. Doctors of hearing organization also makes regular donations to animal shelters.

IMG7319Dr. Camacho was deeply honored to hear Representative Judy Chu commend her decades-long career in improving her community through healthy communication. Dr. Camacho was the first in her family to graduate from both high school and college and has worked hard in the past to become an advocate for the hard-of-hearing community, along with her profession. She is a board member of the California Academy of Audiology (membership chair), and developed an app that provides support for those who are hard of hearing.

Dr. Norma Camacho Getting Women Of The Year Award

We all know how much of an impact a teacher can have in the life of a child. Early identification of hearing loss can make a huge difference in the life of a child and have a significant impact on their studies.

Many children with hearing loss display similar problems as those kids who have a learning disability or behavioral problems. Most children that have hearing loss can still hear but they are unable to understand the conversation because they have what is known as high frequency hearing loss. When we lose our hearing we may not loose it all, some frequency ranges of our hearing may be gone while others remain normal.

What is considered hearing loss? Hearing loss is when an individual has trouble hearing and understanding what is said. You may notice that people need to repeat themselves around that person. Hearing loss has a number of different causes.

Children that suffer from respiratory issues, diabetes, renal problems, cancer, or other syndrome generally have a higher risk of hearing loss. Hearing loss may be a result of ear infections, high fever, injury, (slap on the ear or face) malfunction, deterioration of the hearing mechanism due to ototoxic medication, or exposure to excessive loud noise. Some hearing loss is caused by lack of oxygen during birth, a disease or a particular syndrome (Downs Syndrome). Even a small hearing loss has an impact on the quality of life and needs to be addressed.

FACT: A mild hearing loss can cause a child to miss as much as 50% of classroom discussion.

How do you know that a child has hearing loss? Look for these signs:

  • Lower than expected academic achievement
  • Lack of attention
  • Requires constant repetition
  • Requires visual information in order to understand speech
  • Responds inappropriately to questions
  • Problems with articulation or other speech difficulties
  • Day-dreaming
  • Exhibits fatigue
  • Poor view of him or herself
  • Behavioral problems
  • Misunderstands directions or instructions
  • Lack of participation in the classroom
  • Watching other pupils to see what they are doing
  • Constant ear infections (excessive bad colds, sinus problems, bad allergies)
  • Constant ear pain

Students can get a screening at the Nurses office or their pediatrician’s office, but it is recommended that a comprehensive hearing test be done by a certified Audiologist. Proper equipment and training is necessary to identify the various types of hearing loss that is sometimes missed by nurses or even pediatricians.

Our Passionate Team

We are fortunate to have compassionate, sympathetic, attentive, skilled, and knowledgeable staff.  Most of our patient care coordinators, audiology aids, administrators, and office manager, have experience in Audiology and the hearing aid dispensing industry, and others have at least a BA in Communicative Disorders along with experience in this field.  We also hire graduate students in Audiology.   The DoctorsOfHearing team embraces the patient care centered approach model.  As consumers and patients, we know a positive patient experience is critical in order to deliver the best care possible.

At DOH, we ensure that our patients leave satisfied with our care and with their needs fulfilled as these two aspects are critical aspects of the healthcare industry. We try to make health care access convenient and safe.  We currently have 3 clinics to serve you, our Glendora location is ideal to serve those patients with emergencies because it has a large parking lot and a spacious clinic. (This location is in the middle of Pasadena and Rancho Cucamonga offices).

Our focus is to make health care access as needed, therefore DOH has an App to communicate with patients for simple needs. We recently added this TeleHealth tool to make healthcare more accessible for basic needs. We know financial barriers in the Health Care System exist, because of this, we are transparent with our prices and our services.  Our staff is available to check all of our patients' insurance cards to make sure they can get some or all financial support from their insurance services. DOH works hard to find solutions for all of our patients and experience real improvement in their hearing.
